Manado – This 2017 in Manado, North Sulawesi (29/7) people witnessed a meeting of six countries concerning on cooperation to overcome Foreign Terrorist Fighters (FTF) and cross-border Terrorism, Indonesia get together with ministers and senior officials from Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Philippines, Malaysia And New Zealand. This is a follow-up of international meeting previously held in August 2016 in Bali, Indonesia.
The sub-regional meeting has been agreed upon the importance of correctional managements and several important steps to be taken, such as cooperation improvement among immigration agencies regarding border control.
Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs, Wiranto representing the Government of Indonesia, along with Minister of Law and Human Rights, Yasonna H. Laoly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Retno Marsudi, Minister of Communication and Informatics, Rudiantara and Indonesia National Police Chief Tito Karnavian stated that the meeting was also a response to the recent situations and security threats in the region as well as international scope caused by the activity of Foreign Terrorist Fighters and cross-border terrorists.
"We cannot be alone defeating terrorists, because they are a transnational organization, so unity among countries is needed to deal with it", said Wiranto.
The six countries agreed on three important issues, those are the update of Foreign Terrorist Fighters and Cross Border Terrorism in the sub regions; secondly, cooperation improvement regarding Counter Violent Extremism and de-radicalization, both domestic and regional levels.
Thirdly, Improving the legal framework and legal cooperation, "the meeting mostly agreed on the importance of enhancing cooperation with civil society, women empowerment, education, economic development, prison management, promoting de-radicalization programs, and narrative preparation to counter the terrorists’ propaganda", explains Wiranto.
As a follow-up of the meeting, a forum will be established on the FTF in order to increase cooperation on sharing information, and cooperation between law enforcer and intelligence agency.
"In addition, the cooperation of the six countries with corporates providing social media services, video file sharing, and messaging is also need to be encouraged, as well as comparative studies of terrorism-related laws prevailing in each country", said Wiranto.
Equally important, the forum also agreed on enhancing cooperation in combating the financing of terrorism (CFT). (Teguh, Bowo)
